Local opposition kills plans for 10 MW wind farm

Due to local opposition, the Japanese trading company Mitsui & Co has dropped plans for a 10 MW wind farm in Kuramanai near Wakkanai city on Hokkaido island (Windpower Monthly, February 1999). Citizens in the area complained that the wind turbines would be too close to houses and they were concerned about possible noise and aesthetic problems. Mitsui & Co had otherwise planned to get technical support for the project from Ishikawajima Harima Heavy Industries Co, the Japanese agent for German/Danish wind company Nordex.
