Wind rush expected now Kyoto Protocol in force
1 March 2005
With the Kyoto Protocol now in force, a rush of wind project proposals under the legislation's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is expected in India. Under CDM, credits gained from projects built in one country can be sold to another to help it meet its emission reduction requirements under the protocol. While 46 of the 150 wind projects submitted for CDM status in India have already been approved as meeting the Kyoto requirements, Ajay Mathur of Senergy Global Pvt Mathur suggests the numbers will rise substantially. "In the next few months, we expect at least 600-700 MW of wind power projects to become CDM projects, valued at around $79 million," he says. With the mechanism expected to bring in anything between INR 0.04-0.05/kWh and INR 0.50-0.60/kWh, green energy will become a more profitable venture, Mathur adds.
