Opportunities for how municipal utilities can invest in wind projects is the focus of a new report produced by a group of utilities in the Midwest and the Midwestern office of the Izaak Walton League of America. "Wind on the Wires" is to help utility managers and others analyse how wind energy and other renewables can be integrated into a small utility's resource base. The report also discusses how wind is treated as a supply-side resource and how wind projects can be financed. It notes that a wind project can be shared by municipal utilities, just as a fossil fired plant, to provide an increment in capacity. Case studies are discussed from Iowa and Minnesota. The utilities behind the report, issued at the end of March, are the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities, the Minnesota Municipal Utility Association, and the Missouri Basin Municipal Power Agency.
