Vestas picked as supplier for UK 300 MW Thanet offshore project

Vestas has been chosen by Britain's Warwick Energy as preferred supplier for its 300 MW Thanet offshore project in the outer Thames Estuary, east of London. Vestas will supply 100 of its 3 MW turbines and install them 11 kilometres off the coast of Thanet in the summer of 2008. The contract, however, is subject to the wind farm gaining consent and the project being financially viable. Warwick says this will depend on the government introducing more financial support for offshore wind. In its recent energy review, the government announced its intention to "band" its current support mechanism, the Renewables Obligation (RO), to allow less commercial technologies to receive more Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROCs) per megawatt hour. A public consultation is expected on its plans.
