Gotland is permitting another 21, 500 kW turbines on Näsudden in addition to the handful for which foundations were built in November and December. Total installed wind capacity on Näsudden is expected to increase from 12 to 24 MW within a year or two. The grid on this sparsely populated cape on southern Gotland, however, first has to be strengthened. The Gotland utility, GEAB is already projecting a new line to be built in 1995. It charges a SEK 500/kW connection-fee for wind plant, or SEK 250,000 for a 500 kW turbine. The fee is high compared with that charged in the rest of the country. Today wind power delivers 4% of the electricity on Gotland and this is expected to rise to 8% in the next couple of years. The maximum capacity needed on Gotland is 150 MW, but during off peak periods demand can dip to just 50 MW. According to GEAB this is also the practical limit for wind power. Gotland has an isolated grid and imports most of its electricity from the mainland using a high voltage DC-link.
