Enercon is installing 27 of its E66 1.8 MW turbines in north and central Portugal, the German wind turbine manufacturer reports. Six machines were installed in January at Parque Eolico do Alvao, north of Vila Real for Empreendimento Eolico da Alvadia. Another six out of a total nine have gone up at Cabril and 12 will be erected at Pinheiro, to be operated by Eolica da Cabreira. All projects will be completed by the summer. The towers for all 27 turbines are being built by Tegopi in Porto. Antonio Esteves of Enercon's marketing arm in Portugal anticipates a boom in Portugal, building on existing installations of just over 100 MW, since the government's recent decision to support expansion of wind energy to 3000 MW by 2010. By the end of 2001, Enercon says it had installed 87 of its E40 model, rated at 500 kW or 600 kW, in Portugal, amounting to more than one-third of installed capacity to date.
