Prime minister attends 15 MW wind plant inauguration

The inauguration of a 15 MW wind project in Tamil Nadu attracted major dignitaries, including India's prime minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee. At the ceremony, Vajpayee said the government envisioned a major role for renewable energy and that intensive efforts in research and development were required to create technologies suitable to Indian conditions. The new wind plant consists of 30, 500 kW RRB Vestas wind turbines at Kayathar and Perungudi. The $15.5 million project was developed by Mohan Breweries and Distilleries with co-financing by Danida, the Danish overseas aid organisation. Indian minister of power, P.R. Kumaramangalam, stressed the need for developing technology to ensure that power generated by the renewables sector reached the grid without being wasted. The grid, he said, received only 23% to 27% of the electricity generated in the sector.
