The newly formed New Zealand Wind Energy Association is hoping that its planned Open Day for the Wellington public will demonstrate that wind turbines "do not sound like an old washing machine," says NZWEA's Paul van Lieshout. He says he hears the comparison virtually every day. Noise concern has been one of the factors pushing community opposition to a planned 45-60 MW wind farm at Makara just outside Wellington. The NZWEA has planned a broad range of informational activities for the Open Day, to be held underneath the 225 kW Vestas turbine on Brooklyn Heights above the city. The turbine is owned by the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand.
