Windy Standard running
1 August 1997
Further south in Dumfries and Galloway, National Wind Power's first Scottish wind farm was formally switched on in mid July by Barbara Kelly of Scottish Natural Heritage. The 36 Nordtank 600 kW machines at Windy Standard, on hills above the Carsphairn forest, are owned jointly by NWP's parent company National Power PLC and Fred Olsen Ltd. It will continue to be operated by NWP. Electricity from Windy Standard will be sold under two SRO contracts at around £0.04/kWh. National Wind Power says the wind farm received overwhelming support during two days of public visits to mark its opening. Some 380 people took the opportunity to inspect the wind turbines at closer hand. Of the 162 who completed a questionnaire, 96% supported the scheme, 3% were undecided, while only 1% were against the development.
