Technology from the Windicator
1 April 2008
Despite the pressures of rapid growth, the wind industry continues to innovate and push towards larger machines. In Germany, Enercon is testing a 6 MW turbine with a rotor diameter of 126 metres, for use on land, not offshore. At the commercial scale, improvements to wind turbine design and manufacture continue, especially improved production techniques and increasingly sophisticated monitoring systems to identify faults on turbines in the field to allow them to be rectified as early as possible. Advanced electrical generators are also enabling the industry to meet grid code requirements that are becoming more stringent as network operators seek reassurance that the increasing numbers of wind turbines connected to their systems do not introduce unnecessary harmonics or destabilise the system in any way.
