Shell WindEnergy Inc has increased its wind plant holdings in North America to 130 MW with the purchase of the 80 MW Llano Estacado Wind Ranch, developed by Cielo Wind Power at White Deer, near Amarillo, Texas. The plant was finished by Cielo just in time to qualify for wind's federal Production Tax Credit before it expired at the end of last year. Power from the plant is being sold to Xcel Energy, allowing the company to conserve 160 million gallons of it hydro resources a year, says the company's Gary L Gibson. Conserving water is particularly important in West Texas, he adds. Shell's first major wind farm purchase was made last year when it bought the 50 MW Rock River 1 facility at Foote Creek, Wyoming.
