Installed capacity up 24 per cent

Portugal's installed wind power capacity has grown by 24% since the beginning of the year to 2672 MW and is on track to reach 2800 MW by year-end. Wind power is now providing 4% of the country's electricity. Just under 40% of all Portugal's continental wind power consists of fairly small projects, rated at 25 MW or less, with average investment of EUR 1.18 million a megawatt. According to the Directorate General for Energy and Geology (DGEG), electricity generated from wind from January to August totalled 3.6 TWh, 34% more than the same period last year. Wind power is on track to supply 15% of Portugal's electricity by 2010, says DGEG. Portugal ranks tenth globally in installed wind power capacity.
