German wind turbine manufacturer Nordex has landed an order worth EUR 37 million from Fred Olsen Renewables Ltd for 20, 2.5 MW machines. The wind turbines, for a site at Crystal Rig near Dunbar in the Scottish Borders, will be the largest on mainland Britain. The site boasts high mean wind speeds of 9.3 m/s, and the 49 MW wind farm will be the most powerful in the UK. The order for the turbine towers goes to Cambrian Engineering and will be the first to be built at its new Scottish factory on the Isle of Lewis. Nick Emery from Fred Olsen Renewables says: " Crystal Rig shows the potential for Scotland to create a significant and sustainable renewable energy industry." Nordex says it has agreed with Fred Olsen on an option for a further five turbines at Crystal Rig.
