Electricity from a new wind plant of Kenetech KVS-33 turbines in Solano County is so far costing $0.0527 /kWh to produce, said project manager Paul Olmstead of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) at the Windpower '95 conference last month. The 5 MW project's availability has been 92.7% on average for the first six months of operation, he added. "To date, we're very pleased," he said. It was the first time SMUD has released production figures from the wind plant. Olmstead believed the utility will take up its option to build another 45 MW. He noted, though, that SMUD is not obliged to go ahead if the project performs inadequately or if too many birds are killed. He said that one red- tailed hawk and five kestrels have been killed, which are common species.
