Utility orders 600 kW

Okinawa Electric Power Co has ordered a 600 kW wind turbine from Vestas after a competitive tendering process. The wind turbine is the largest to go up in the country so far. "With this order there's a good chance of getting repeat orders in the future," says sales manager Erwan Oger from Vestas' Japanese agent, United Chemical Products in Yokohama. Okinawa Electric Power, in the south of Japan, says it will test the Vestas turbine alongside two models from other suppliers for one to two years. After that time it will consider installation of wind turbines on 12 of the larger islands in Okinawa in order to reduce the prefecture's dependence on diesel fuel.
