VETO FROM THE MILLITARY

In a surprise attack the Swedish military has stopped all wind power projects in two large regions, in the Trelleborg area on the south coast and in Roslagen in the Stockholm archipelago. In Trelleborg the veto from the military arrived by fax one day before planners were going to grant consent to several wind projects in the community. In Roslagen, Roslagsmöllan had picked out 15 potential wind power sites, hoping to get permission to erect wind turbines on four of these. But even though the local Norrtälje authority supports wind power in the area, the military vetoed all the sites in mid September. A visit to the Ministry of Defence by the Swedish wind power association on October 4 resulted in the formation of a committee to solve the conflict of interests. The committee is made up of representatives from the wind association, the military and the ministries of defence, environment and energy.
