South Fork Wind has shipped the first offshore wind turbine from New London, Connecticut, to the project’s New York site.
The 132MW offshore wind project – developed by Danish renewables major Ørsted and New England utility Eversource – is one of two currently under construction in the US.
The first of South Fork Wind’s 12 Siemens Gamesa 11.0-200 DD wind turbines has been loaded onto a transport barge pulled by two tugboats destined for the project site 56km off Montauk at the end of New York state’s Long Island peninsula.
The first turbine will be installed within days, according to Ørsted, which has been facing financial troubles and has just scrapped two offshore wind projects off New Jersey.
