Xcel Energy is seeking 1.2GW of wind power to replace a coal-fired power plant in central Minnesota. The Sherco coal plant will be closed this decade.
The utility is seeking wind projects located in south-west Minnesota with commercial operations due to start by the end of 2027.
Xcel Energy’s proposed Minnesota Energy Connection transmission line would deliver 2GW of renewable energy, including this new wind energy, to the grid at Sherco. The line is currently being reviewed by state regulators. It would run 257-290 km from Lyon County to Becker.
By reusing Sherco’s existing grid connections, Xcel Energy can provide customers with power in the most efficient and cost-effective way, the utility stated.
