Terna Energy completes construction of Greece’s largest wind farm

Construction has completed on Greece’s largest wind farm, the developer behind the project has said.

The 330MW Kafireas II project is being developed by Greek renewables developer Terna Energy, and is already partially operational. 

Terna announced construction at the project was finished in its H1 2023 financial results. The company now has 1.22GW of installed capacity, of which 1.09GW is connected and operational. 

First power at the onshore wind farm was achieved last year after an installation operation which included Greek cabling company Hellenic Cables laying transmission lines between Euboea island, where the wind farm is located, and Greece’s mainland.

Kafireas II’s costs are estimated at $550 million according to Windpower Intelligence, the data and research division of Windpower Monthly. 

Now the largest wind farm in Greece, Kafireas II has a sister project – the 154MW Kafireas – which came online in 2019. Both wind farms are located near Evia on Euboea island in eastern Greece.

Greece currently has 4.7GW of installed wind capacity, all of it onshore, according to Windpower Intelligence, Windpower Monthly's data and research division.
