Saitec delivers first power from RWE-backed floating offshore wind pilot

A joint venture of Spanish engineering firm Saitec Offshore Technologies, German energy major RWE and Japanese utility Kansai Electric Power have delivered first power from a 2MW floating offshore wind pilot project in open waters off the coast of Bilbao.

Their 2MW DemoSATH project is installed at the Bimep testing site off the coast of Armintza in northern Spain.

Its platform features two cylindrical and horizontal hulls with conical edges braced by a concrete frame. It can align itself around a single point of mooring, according to the direction of the wind and waves, Saitec has claimed – giving the platform its 'swinging around the hull' (Sath) name.

The technology will be tested during a two-year operational period at the Bimep site, and tasks related to its operation and maintenance requirements will be analysed.
