EDF Renewables joins Simply Blue for gigawatt-scale Irish floating offshore wind

EDF Renewables has entered a joint venture with Simply Blue Group to develop two gigawatt-scale Irish floating offshore wind farms after oil and gas major Shell exited the projects.

EDF and Simply Blue expect to get merger clearance for their 50:50 partnership for the 1.35GW Western Star and 1.3GW Emerald floating wind farms in the coming months.

Western Star and Emerald are planned in the Atlantic Ocean and Irish Sea respectively.

EDF Renewables last month secured a contract for difference (CfD) for its Codling wind farm in Ireland’s first offshore wind tender. It is also developing floating projects off the coasts of France and the UK.

Simply Blue was developing Western Star and Emerald with Shell, but the oil and gas major exited the projects last year. It is developing more than 10GW of floating wind projects globally.
