Turbine maker WEG has secured a loan of BRL 59 million ($12 million) from Brazil’s national development bank BNDES to help finance its 7MW onshore wind turbine for the domestic market, with manufacturing due to start by the end of next year.
BNDES said the turbine would be the largest in operation in Brazil and would allow new onshore wind farms to generate electricity more efficiently.
The turbine will have a rotor diameter of 172 metres and will use new technology to optimise the weight of its components.
“This new operation seeks to innovate through the production of more efficient wind turbines, which meets the new strategic guidelines of the bank to have a more prosperous, green, digital and inclusive economy,” said BNDES director of production development innovation and foreign trade José Luis Gordon.
