Iberdrola to sell German offshore wind output to Mercedes-Benz

Iberdrola has sealed a deal to supply carmaker Mercedes-Benz with electricity from a 140MW portion of its planned 315MW Windanker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea.

The power purchase agreement (PPA) adds to a deal announced yesterday (29 March) with technology giant Amazon, which will also buy output from Windanker.

“With this PPA and other agreements, Iberdrola is bringing its offshore wind energy to the market without subsidies and is materialising an important further step of Germany’s energy transition,” Iberdrola stated.

It exercised its step-in rights for Windanker in 2021, taking the right to build the project away from auction winner RWE.

Windanker is due online in 2027.

Its electricity will help Mercedes towards its target of at least halving CO2 emissions per passenger/car over its entire life cycle by the end of this decade compared to 2020 levels.
