Vestas wins first order for V163-4.5MW wind turbine

Vestas has secured the first order for its V163-4.5MW onshore wind turbine as part of a 373MW supply deal in South Africa.

Vestas's V163-4.5MW turbine can be used globally, but is particularly suitable for sites in the US, Latin America, South Africa and parts of southern Europe

The Danish manufacturer will supply independent power producer Red Rocket with turbines for its Brandvalley, Rietkloof and Wolf projects in Western Cape and Eastern Cape, South Africa.

It will provide 64 of its V150-4.5MW turbines, 12 of its V163-4.5MW turbines, and five of its V162-6.2MW turbines for the three wind farms.

Turbine delivery and project commissioning are expected in 2024. Vestas will then service the projects for 15 years.

The deal includes the first order of Vestas’ low- and medium-wind V163-4.5MW turbine, which it unveiled exclusively in Windpower Monthly in May 2022.

Red Rocket – which has a 1GW-plus portfolio of wind, solar and hydro projects under development, under construction or in operations in South Africa – secured contracts for the wind farms in South Africa’s fifth renewables tender in 2021.
