French renewables developer Neoen has signed a deal to provide mining firm BHP with ‘baseload’ power from a wind farm and a battery storage project in South Australia.
Under the terms of the 70MW contract, it will provide BHP with nearly half of output from its under-construction 412MW Goyder South 1 wind farm. It will combine this with storage capacity from a nearby utility-scale battery storage project to smooth the variability of supply and ensure 24/7, or ‘baseload’ power supply.
From July 2025, BHP will use the electricity to power half of the operations at its Olympic Dam operations, where it mines copper, gold and uranium.
