US ring-fences $30 million for R&D to lower cost of wind projects

The administration of President Joe Biden will use almost $30 million from the bipartisan Infrastructure Law adopted last year to fund research and development projects to lower costs for on- and offshore wind projects.

Funding applicants must support one of the following initiatives:

Advancing technologies to transmit large amounts of electricity from offshore wind over long distances, supporting standards for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission for offshore wind, developing and validating innovative controls to ensure reliability and compatibility with AC and DC, and identifying and addressing gaps in education and workforce training to support HVDC transmission deployment for offshore wind.

Helping coastal communities benefit from offshore wind development through social science research and community engagement.

Improving permitting processes to make distributed wind more accessible to communities where distributed wind can be cost-effectively and equitably deployed.

Improving technologies that help bats avoid wind turbines.
