Ukrainian developer: ‘Half our wind farms are under occupation’

In an online press conference today (13/10) which was delayed by an air strike, Maxim Timchenko, chief executive of Ukrainian developer DTEK, reported that 500MW of the company’s wind farms were currently occupied by Russian forces and non-operational.

Organisers of the online conference asked journalists to postpone the briefing by half an hour after they were forced to take cover in a shelter when an air-raid siren went off.

The briefing was held today to provide information on the state of Ukraine’s energy security, following recent shelling by Russian forces that targeted energy, telecommunication and civil infrastructure, as well as city traffic.

Some of DTEK’s assets are located in the Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine, which has seen heavy shelling by Russian forces in recent days.

Commenting on their current status, Timchenko said: “Unfortunately, half our wind farms are under occupation at the moment. We have 500MW of wind farms located in the Zaporizhzhia region.”

He added: “It's not operating now. It's not destroyed and it’s not damaged as far as we know - but it's not in operation.”

DTEK later clarified that a further 486MW of its assets were in territory currently controlled by Ukraine and were fully operational.

The company said the biggest losses to its business were not financial, but human, and that 85 of its people had died since the war began in February while a further 15 were missing. Windpower Monthly wishes to express its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of those who have been affected.
