Nordex secures type certification for uprated onshore wind turbines

Nordex has received three major certificates for turbines in the 4MW, 5MW and 6MW class. IEC type certification, valid worldwide, in accordance with the IEC 61400-22 standard, has been awarded to its N163/5.X by TÜV SÜD and its N155/4.X turbine by UL Solutions – the first type certification for the 155m rotor diameter platform.

With IEC 61400-22 type certification, the independent certification bodies "have now officially confirmed that the theoretical design calculations for the N155/4.X and N163/5.X reflect the expected behaviour of the turbines as measured on the field", Nordex said.

IEC certification is a prerequisite for international project tenders and a crucial step in the project certification process, the firm noted. The evaluation reviews power performance, measurements of mechanical loads during operation as well as the lifetime of the turbine type under different operating modes, among other things.

Likewise, the rotor blades for both turbines have been successfully certified for a lifetime of at least 20 years based on dynamical, full-scale rotor blade tests, Nordex said. The turbines can be operated with standard rotor blades or, in the case of the N163/5.X, with anti-icing rotor blades for cold regions.

TÜV SÜD also awarded an official statement of compliance for design evaluation for Nordex's N163/6.X, which is the first prerequisite for achieving an IEC type certificate for the turbine, the firm added.

The German turbine manufacturer made the announcement at this week's WindEnergency Hamburg 2022 event (27-30 September).
