Orkney community wind farm project at risk if deadline not met

Orkney Islands Council has called on the Scottish Government to grant planning permission for the six-turbine, 28.8MW Faray project.

In September 2021, the application was called in. Faray forms the final element of Orkney's community wind farm project. Planning permission was granted for the Quanterness and Hoy developments in December 2021.

Ofgem has stated that a new Orkney-Scottish mainland interconnector would require planning permission to be granted for 135MW of new generation capacity and that this would require it to be signed up to a grid connection.

Currently, around 110MW of projects have been consented and Faray is the only project with the potential to fill the gap and trigger the cable before the end-of-year deadline.
