In Sweden, one of Europe’s largest wind farms was commissioned: the 475MW Nysäter in Västernorrland County. RWE owns a 20% stake in the 114-turbine asset and will operate it, while Energy Infrastructure Partners owns 80%.
Meanwhile, E.ON and Renewable Power Capital signed grid connection agreements for four other wind farms in Västernorrland County: the 132MW Sörlidberget, 92.4MW Knäsjöberget, 171.6MW Vitberget and 165MW Storhöjden.
Elsewhere, OX2 agreed to take on the technical, commercial and financial management of the 253MW MB2 North, while Enercon finalised a bridge financing agreement with DNB Bank, for the under-construction 134MW Ersträsk North. Both form parts of the Markbygden cluster in Norrbotten County.
Eolus signed an agreement with DalaVind, to raise its stake in the Fageråsen project to 49%. Planned for a site near Malung, the 33-turbine development would provide just over 200MW from autumn 2026.
And Neoen announced that it had begun the construction of its first Swedish wind farm, the 57.4MW Storbrännkullen in Jämtland and Västernorrland Counties. Set to comprise ten Nordex N163 turbines, its commissioning is planned for late 2023.
Offshore, OX2 submitted a permit application for the 5.5GW Aurora in the Baltic Sea, while Vattenfall was set to acquire an 85% stake in Zephyr's 1.4GW Poseidon and 1.4GW Vidar projects in the Skagerrak. And Cloudberry agreed the sale of 50% of Cloudberry Offshore Wind, to form a 50/50 joint venture with Hafslund. Cloudberry Offshore Wind indirectly owns the 100MW Stenkalles Grund, which is being developed at a site in Vänern, Sweden’s largest lake.
In Finland, the 211MW Piiparinmäki commenced commercial operations. Developed by Ilmatar Energy, it is owned by Glennmont and Kansai Electric, with the latter having acquired a 15% stake in 2020. Comprising 13 V150 4.2 MW and 28 V150 5.6 MW turbines, Google will offtake over half of Piiparinmäki’s output through a 10-year Power Purchase Agreement, with the remainder being sold through a merchant agreement with Vattenfall.
VSB Group agreed the sale to Helen, of the Karahka and Juurakko wind farms in the Northern Ostrobothnia region. The seven-turbine, 40MW Juurakko is under construction and due for completion by the end of 2022, while construction of the 25-turbine, 150MW Karahka will begin in autumn 2022, with commissioning scheduled by the end of 2024.
Meanwhile, with finance secured from AIP Management, Ilmatar announced that it was set to begin the construction of four Finnish wind farms. Together, they will provide 131.8MW from the first quarter of 2024. Fortum agreed to supply Anora’s Koskenkorva distillery, from the 90MW Kalax. And OX2 handed over the newly online 45MW Korkeakangas to Aquila Capital.
In the Danish offshore sector, Fugro began geotechnical site investigations at the site of RWE’s 1GW Thor project. Planned for a site 22km offshore in the North Sea, it will become Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm. Meanwhile, the proposed site for the 1.2GW Hesselø was moved and the Danish Energy Agency approved the feasibility study for HOFOR’s planned 300MW Aflandshage.
