Vestas installs Japan’s first commercial offshore wind turbine

Danish firm Vestas has installed the first of 33 V117-4.2MW turbines at Japanese utility Marubeni’s Akita Noshiro offshore wind farm.

Japan has several demonstration offshore turbines already operational, but the newly installed Vestas turbine is the country’s first at a commercial offshore wind farm.

The 140MW Akita Noshiro project is due to comprise 33 of Vestas’ V117-4.2MW turbines, and is being installed off the coast of Akita prefecture in the north-east of Japan’s main island of Honshu.
