Drivetrain specialist Flender to acquire wind turbine gearbox maker Moventas

German drivetrain specialist Flender has agreed to acquire Finnish wind turbine gearbox manufacturer Moventas. Previously a Siemens subsidiary, Flender was acquired by asset management firm Carlyle Group in March 2021.

“Integrating Moventas’s engineering and service capabilities will further foster Flender’s wind drives business under the successful Winergy product brand,” Flender stated. 

The acquisition will include the full scope of Moventas Gears Oy business, with all global production and service facilities.

The 22GW of Moventas installed base, service know-how and multi-brand capabilities will be a “lever for further growth in Winergy service business, resulting in a comprehensive one-stop service solution for wind customers”, Flender explained. 

Winergy, which was established in 2001 by Flender as a wind industry-specific brand, set out its strategic vision last summer to expand its scope from components supplier to integrated drivetrain systems provider, in response to market demands for standardised and integrated powertrain solutions.

“Moventas is a well-known brand in the wind industry. We are very fond [sic] to have their expertise and capacities under our roof now. It lets us further expand our wide product portfolio for the growing wind market to support the important energy transition,” said Flender Group chief executive Andreas Evertz. 

“With gearboxes, generators, couplings, integrated drivetrains and a comprehensive multi-brand service portfolio, we are the unique partner for the wind market,” he added.

The Moventas global production and service network provides an additional 3GW wind gearbox assembly capacities, next to extensive capabilities in field services as well as gear manufacturing, Flender stated.
