From 1 January 2022, Siberian Anthracite will purchase enough wind-generated electricity to cover 100% of its needs for the next three years. It will become the first Russian coal-mining enterprise to do so.
The company, which is part of the Sibanthracite Group, has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA), linked to NovaWind’s wind farms in the south-western regions of Stavropol and Adygea. “The shift to clean renewable energy is part of the Group’s comprehensive programme to reduce the company’s carbon footprint,” said Sergey Melnikov, general director of Sibanthracite’s management company.
“We are proud that Siberian Anthracite will be the first coal mining company in our country to fully cover its needs from renewable energy sources,” he added.
The Sibanthracite Group is also considering using electricity generated by renewable energy at its two open-pit mines: Vostochny in Novosibirsk and Kiyzassky in Kemerovo.
The company – Russia’s largest producer of metallurgical coal – said it will consider the possibility of using clean energy in all of its investment projects.
NovaWind manages the wind energy activities of Russia’s energy incumbent Rosatom, from design and construction to power engineering and wind farm operation.
