Chinese turbine manufacturer Shanghai Electric has unveiled a new 11MW direct-drive offshore wind turbine.
The manufacturer has the full intellectual property rights for its SEW 11.0-208 turbine, it stated. It has the rights to build European manufacturer Siemens Gamesa's 8MW offshore wind turbines through a licensing agreement.
Shanghai Electric's SEW 11.0-208 is part of its new Petrel platform, which is designed to withstand earthquakes and typhoons, as well as high temperatures, humidity and salt.
The turbine also uses Shanghai Electric’s LeapX control system, which is designed to help reduce operating load and improve the operating stability of the unit.
It will be aided by the manufacturer’s cloud-based remote management system Fengyun, which will help boost operational efficiency, Shanghai Electric stated.
The SEW 11.0-208 turbine features 102-metre carbon-fibre blades.
Shanghai Electric has not announced when it plans to install a prototype or begin serial production of the SEW 11.0-208.
Announcing the turbine, it shared a photo of what appears to be the SEW 11.0-208's nacelle. It is unclear whether any other components have been built yet.
Other turbine manufacturers have announced larger, more powerful offshore wind turbines: GE has its 14MW Haliade-X, Siemens Gamesa has its SG 14.0-222 DD, Vestas has its V236-15.0MW, and MingYang has its MySE16.0-242.
