Brazilian energy firm Neoenergia has begun commercial operations at one of the country’s largest wind complexes, the Iberdrola subsidiary has confirmed.

The company has already brought online ten turbines with 34.65MW of installed capacity and expects to complete the process by the end of the year. The rest of the turbines are now in the testing phase.

The launch comes 17 months ahead of the start of the contract with Brazil’s regulated market, “strengthening Neoenergia’s position in the development of its strategic plan and its commitment to the rate of returns on its projects”, the developer stated.

Construction of the complex began in October 2019. It will sell 61% of its energy to Brazil’s regulated market and the 39% to private clients.

The start of operations was made possible thanks to the start-up of the Santa Luzia II substation and a transmission which Neoenergia acquired at a tender in December 2017.

Neoenergia already has three wind farms in operation in Brazil.

Iberdrola owns 50% plus one share of Neoenergia, pension fund Previ owns 32.9% of the company while the rest of shares are traded on the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange.
