More than 1GW of turbine sales in Brazil were recorded in June, representing nearly a quarter of all turbine purchase agreements (TPAs) recorded globally last month, according to Windpower Intelligence, the research and data division of Windpower Monthly.
Nordex’s order book was the main beneficiary, with two very large TPAs being announced in June — although the company did not disclose details of when they were made.
The German manufacturer will supply 70 N163/5.X turbines, in 5.7MW mode, to an undisclosed 399MW project in Piaui in the north-east of the country. Installation is due to start in early 2023, after which Nordex will also provide service for five years.
The second Nordex deal is for 55 N163/5.X turbines, also in 5.7MW mode, at AES Brasil’s 684MW Cajuína 1 & 2 Cajuína 1 & 2 (684MW) OnshoreRio Grande do Norte, Brazil, Central & South America Click to see full details project in Rio Grande do Norte in the north-east. The TPA includes service for five years, and several extension options of up to 20 years. Installation is due to begin next summer.
Vestas also clinched a large Brazilian TPA, for the supply of 81 V150-4.2 MW turbines in 4.3MW mode to an undisclosed 348MW project. Deliveries and commissioning are planned for 2023. Vestas is then due to service the turbines for five years.
Overall, Vestas was the most active OEM in June, with more than 2.6GW in turbine orders recorded across 13 other countries, in addition to Brazil, and representing nearly 60% of all TPAs recorded last month, according to Windpower Intelligence data.
Large volumes of Vestas turbines were sold in the US, Finland and Ukraine.
In the US, four Vestas turbine orders were recorded:
- A 219MW order for two undisclosed projects, comprising 26 V150-4.2 MW, 22 V150-4.2 MW and 3 V136-4.2 MW turbines — all of which are due to be delivered in 4.3MW mode. Delivery and commissioning are scheduled for 2022, with a 20-year service agreement included.
- A 145MW order for 2MW platform turbines, including V120-2.2 MW, V110-2.2 MW and V110-2.0 MW models, to be installed at Leeward Renewable Energy’s 145MW Panorama Panorama (145MW) OnshoreWeld County, Colorado, USA, North America Click to see full details project in Colorado. - A total of 91MW for two undisclosed repowering projects, comprising V110-2.2 MW turbines, V117-4.2 MW (in 4.3MW mode) and V117-3.45 MW (in 3.6MW mode).
- And 22 V150-4.2 MW turbines for an undisclosed 92MW project due online next year, with service also included.
In Finland, Vestas secured three orders:
- 17 V162-6.0 MW turbines to EPV Energy, for the 102MW Norrskogen Norrskogen (102MW) OnshoreÖsterbotten, Finland, Europe Click to see full details project, due online in 2022, and including a 30-year service agreement.

In Ukraine, Vestas agreed to supply 62 V162-6.0 MW turbines to the 372MW second phase – 384MW Tyligulska II Tyligulska II (384MW) OnshoreMykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine, Europe Click to see full details – of DTEK Renewables’ 500MW Tiligulska project. Commissioning of the entire wind farm is planned for the end of 2022, after which Vestas will also provide service for 20 years.
