South America takes biggest share of December onshore wind orders

Driven by large orders in Brazil and Colombia, South America accounted for the bulk of global onshore turbine deals in the final month of 2020. Windpower Monthly takes a look at the figures

Vestas, Siemens Gamesa and Nordex orders in Brazil and Colombia accounted for nearly half of global firm, onshore turbine purchase agreements (TPAs) in December, according to Windpower Intelligence, the research and data division of Windpower Monthly.

The bulk of these orders were secured in Brazil across just five wind farms (1,958MW) with another TPA secured for a 504MW wind project in Colombia. In total, the six projects make up almost 2.5GW (2,462MW) in nameplate capacity.

These South American orders account for 44.9% of the nearly 5.5GW of global firm onshore TPAs recorded by Windpower Intelligence last month.

The wind farms are due to be commissioned by 2023.

Across December, Vestas secured TPAs for four of these six South American projects, securing just under 1.5GW.

The majority of the projects secured orders for the manufacturer’s V150 turbines with power ratings ranging between 4.2MW and 4.5MW.
