GE Renewable Energy has received a full type certificate from DNV GL for its 12MW Haliade-X turbine.

This provides independent verification that the new turbines will operate safely, reliably and according to design specifications.

Testing was carried out on a prototype installed in the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and on blades at the ORE Catapult’s facility in Blyth, UK and at the Massachusetts Wind Technology Test Centre in Boston, US.

GE is yet to receive a type certificate for the 13MW variation of its Haliade-X turbine, but expects to achieve this in the first half of 2021.

The manufacturer explained that receiving a type certificate from DNV GL – the world’s largest independent certification body – will help customers obtain funding when purchasing the turbine.

To date, GE has 1.3GW of provisional orders for its 12MW unit, and 2.4GW for the 13MW variant, according to Windpower Intelligence, the research and data division of Windpower Monthly.

According to the company, one 12MW Haliade-X turbine will be able to generate up to 67GWh of gross annual energy production – based on wind conditions at a typical German North Sea site – which is enough to power 16,000 European households.

Last month, GE’s 13MW Haliade-X prototype set a new world record by generating 312MWh of continuous power in one day.
