GE is due to supply an uprated 13MW version of its Haliade-X turbine to the world’s largest offshore wind farm – SSE and Equinor’s 2400MW Dogger Bank A & B Dogger Bank A & B (2400MW) Offshoreoff Yorkshire, UK, Europe Click to see full details off the north-east coast of England.
It will provide 190 Haliade-X 13MW turbine – split evenly between each of the wind farm’s two phases – subject to financial close on the project.
The installation will be the first ever for a Haliade-X turbine with a rated capacity of 13MW.
GE launched the Haliade-X model with a capacity of 12MW in March 2018.
It commissioned a prototype in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in November 2019 and recently secured a provisional type certificate from DNV GL for the turbine. The manufacturer stated that it intends to upgrade this machine to 13MW “in the coming months” as part of its ongoing testing and certification process.
The uprated 13MW Haliade-X will continue to feature 107-metre long blades and a 220-metre rotor. The company has not explained how it has achieved this 1MW jump in capacity.
GE claimed that one rotation of the uprated 13MW model could generate electricity matching two days of a UK household’s consumption.
SSE and Equinor secured support deals for the Dogger Bank A and B projects in the UK’s contracts for differences tender round in September 2018.
Turbine installation is due to commence in 2023 at Dogger Bank A, with the whole 3.6GW Dogger Bank complex – including a third 1.2GW phase – due online in 2026.
SSE and Equinor are due to reach financial close on Dogger Bank A and B in late 2020.
