Vestas EnVentus prototype up and running

A Vestas V150-5.6MW prototype — the first example of the new EnVentus platform — installed earlier this year at the Østerild test site in Denmark, is now producing electricity.

Announced early in 2019, the EnVentus platform's modular design and medium-speed geared drivetrain breaks new ground in the supersized onshore turbine sector.

"This is a great milestone in our journey towards a fully modular product platform, which enables us to meet customers' increasing needs for customisation and continuous reduction of cost of energy," said Vestas CTO Anders Nielsen.

A prototoype of the longer-bladed V162-5.6MW variant is scheduled to be installed in the last quarter of 2020.

Vestas claims to have secured around 1GW of orders, around 180 units, for the EnVentus in four different markets.

Serial production is expected to start late this year, with type certification following early in 2021.
