The tower-manufacturing plant, due for completion in August, will be the 12th such facility owned by Nordex. It will be located in Motilla del Palancar, about halfway between Madrid and Valencia.
Like some of its predecessors in countries such as Brazil and South Africa, the factory will adopt a mobile concept. This enables some manufacturing activities, such as producing concrete, to take place closer to the wind farms under construction, resulting in better logistics and lower costs.
Each week, the plant will be capable of manufacturing enough 20-metre long convex segments for two 120-metre towers. Assembly will take place during turbine installation on site at the wind farms.
The 120-metre concrete towers are suitable for Nordex’s AW3000 turbines and its Delta4000 series. According to Windpower Intelligence, the research arm of Windpower Monthly, Nordex has confirmed orders for nearly 300MW of such turbines at eight projects under development in Spain.
Of the eight projects, two are located in Castilla-La Mancha, one in neighbouring Castilla y León, and the others in the northern region of Navarra.
Nordex reported strong Q1 2020 results in May, but withdrew its guidance for the 2020 financial year due to Covid-related uncertainties.
