The main bearing of a wind turbine plays a critical role. It provides support for the main shaft and the blades of a wind turbine, as well as coping with the associated dynamic forces. This means it is vital to
protect to avoid costly repairs or replacements.

Main bearing failures make up 3% of major failings of wind turbines, according to a Make Consulting O&M report in 2016. There are various estimates on how much a main bearing replacement costs but it can be between €75,000 to €160,000 for onshore turbines and up to €500,000 for an offshore turbine.
There is also the complexity of replacing the component, on top of its cost – wind turbine towers can be 100 metres tall or more, which means an expensive crane is needed to carry out the work.
