The Swedish utility was awarded permits for the construction of 1520MW Hollandse Kust Zuid Hollandse Kust Zuid (1520MW) OffshoreNetherlands, Europe Click to see full details in two subsidy-free tenders in 2018 and 2019. To leverage cost synergies, the phases were merged into one project, due to be commissioned in 2023.
The zero-subsidy wind farm consists of 140 11MW turbines, which will be supplied by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE).
Vattenfall claimed in its Q1 results in April that it had been largely shielded from the negative impacts of large price declines caused by Covid-19. In a statement, CEO Magnus Hall wrote that the investment in Hollandse Kust Zuid showed his company’s commitment to delivering for the future despite of the coronavirus pandemic.
“The Hollandse Kust Zuid project underlines our commitment to supply the Netherlands and Europe with fossil-free electricity,” he wrote.
“In addition, the investment decision shows that our determination to deliver on our goal to enable fossil-free living within one generation remains firm despite the Covid-19 pandemic”.
The Dutch government has set targets for the country to have 4.5GW of offshore wind operating by 2023 and 11.5GW by 2030.
