Mesonero will serve as the deputy to Iberdrola’s director of business development, Pedro Azagra.
He left the turbine manufacturer at the end of March after ten years with the firm.
“This appointment demonstrates Iberdrola's continued commitment to growth in the renewable energy sector, and David has been an expert in this sector for over a decade with his work at Siemens Gamesa,” an Iberdrola spokesperson said.
During his time at the manufacturer, he was responsible for merging Siemens and Gamesa, reduced gross debt by more than $1 billion in less than a year, helped the company secure investment grade credit ratings, and oversaw the acquisition of Senvion assets.
Meanwhile, Iberdrola expects to invest €10 billion this year — up from €8.15 billion in 2019.
In February, Iberdrola sold its stake in SGRE, claiming the manufacturer was becoming less strategically important.
