Vestas's groundbreaking EnVentus platform, announced in early 2019, has fast-tracked medium-speed drivetrain technology into the mainstream for onshore wind design.
Windpower Monthly editor Shaun Campbell said this solution offered an innovative edge over the year's competition.
"It is not something that many manufacturers are using, and it does give a lot of benefits in the size of the drivetrain and its mass," Campbell explained.
Elsewhere, the turbine's modular approach offers inherent advantages in standardisation and repetitive tasks for significant manufacturing cost savings, while a change of magnets also provides considerable benefits.
