Windpower Monthly rating 3.0/5

Google Translate

Our rating is based on a combination of project pipeline, political and policy support, investor confidence and structural readiness of the country in terms of grid infrastructure, permitting process and local supply chain.

Estimate of installed and operating wind power capacity based on the latest statisitics and measured against the Windpower Intelligence database.

All political parties look favourably upon wind-power production and new developments in Sweden.

While wind power capacity exceeded 9GW at the beginning of 2020, plans to generate all of the country's electricity from renewable sources by 2040 call for a substantial increase.

A number of step changes are considered necessary, in order for this to happen. Not least, reform of the Green Certificates Scheme that is currently shared with Norway, but that Norway intends to end in 2021.

Simplification and streamlining of the planning and permitting process would also help, as would investment in the grid infrastructure and offshore wind capacity.

Should these steps be taken, it is thought likely that wind could eventually meet more than half of Sweden’s electricity demand.
