Work starts at first Swiss wind farm since 2016

Enercon has started construction on what will be the first MW-class wind farm built in Switzerland since 2016, according to Windpower Intelligence.

Enercon expects the 11.75MW wind farm will be commissioned in October 2020

Swiss utility Azienda Elettrica Ticinese’s 11.75MW San Gottardo project will feature five of Enercon’s E-92 2.35MW turbines.

The wind farm is being built at an altitude of 2,100 metres, complicating construction work, Enercon’s Swiss country manager explained.

“This is an extreme location in the Alps with very complex conditions that we had to consider when planning the construction measures,” Tanja Pintschovius added.

The Gotthard Pass in the Alps is closed during the winter, so Enercon only has a very short window for construction.

It will only be able to deliver the tower segments and build the hybrid towers, which will have hub heights of 98 metres, in June.

Turbine installation and completion of the wind farm are scheduled for October 2020.

According to Windpower Intelligence, the research and data division of Windpower Monthly, only a 6.5kW project south of Zurich has been commissioned in Switzerland since 2016.
