New SGRE 6.6MW onshore turbines due for Swedish debut

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) will supply 35 onshore wind turbines with power ratings of 6.6MW for infrastructure manager Foresight's newly acquired 231MW Skaftåsen site in north-east Sweden.

Skaftåsen’s 6.6MW turbines will be up-rated 5.X-155 units from Siemens Gamesa’s 5.X platform, unveiled in April 2019, making them the manufacturer's most powerful onshore wind turbines.

The 5.X platform was initially launched with two 5.8MW models, with rotor diameters of 155-metres and 170-metres.

SGRE will begin installation of the turbines in Q2 2021 and will service them for 30 years.

Temperatures at the site can fall to -15C, so the turbines will be fitted with control software  and hardware that provides extended capabilities during both standstill and operation conditions in cold climates, a Siemens Gamesa spokeswoman explained.

Foresight acquired the under-construction 231MW site from Swedish wind developer Arise on 11 December.

Arise received a fixed consideration of approximately €191 million when the transaction closed, with an additional variable consideration of €6.4 million once construction has been completed.

Commissioning is expected in late-2021.
