La Camera will take up the role from 4 April after his selection was confirmed at Irena's ninth assembly meeting in Abu Dhabi, UAE (11-13 January). His first term will last four years.
He currently acts as director-general for sustainable development, energy and climate for Italy's environment, land and sea ministry, the lobby group said.
"La Camera led the EU and Italian negotiation teams at the climate COP 20 in Lima and was the head of the Italian delegation to the three previous COPs. He has represented Italy in many international forums, including at the EU, UNECE, UNCSD, UN Environment, and the OECD.
He was also professor of environmental and land economics at Rome Tre University's engineering faculty from 2003 to 2010, and has a degree in political science from the University of Messina," according to Irena.
La Camera replaces Amin who had led Irena since 2011. Amin has been awarded the honorary title director-general emeritus.
Amin was selected for Windpower Monthly's 2018 list of influential and interesting people in the wind industry, unveiled in December.
