It installed the 12th and final turbine of the project’s second phase ahead of the "imminent arrival" of south Vietnam’s monsoon season, the developer’s chairman Olivier Duguet said.

Dam Nai’s first phase consists of three G114-2.625MW turbines from Siemens Gamesa, and was commissioned in October 2017.

Its second phase comprises 12 more units of the same model, which have now been installed.

Singaporean developer Blue Circle plans to commission the turbines in November and to start commercial operations at the site in December.

Dam Nai, located in Ninh Thuan province in a corridor between mountains open to the northeast monsoon rain, has "one of the best wind resources of south Vietnam", its developer claimed.

The project is also situated in the middle of rice fields, Blue Circle stated.

To maintain water supply for rice farmers in the area, the developer has managed irrigation around the wind farm, it explained.

The Blue Circle added that between 80MW and 120MW could eventually be installed at the site.

Its chairman Olivier Duguet said: "Construction of the Dam Nai project phase 2 has been carried out with huge pressure coming from the imminent arrival of the monsoon seasons, which starts in November, when high winds would have prevented the erection of the largest rotors in Vietnam."

Vietnam now has about 269MW of installed wind capacity, according to Windpower Intelligence, the research and data division of Windpower Monthly.

The country’s 2016-2030 renewable energy development strategy envisages 800MW installed by 2020, 2GW by 2025, before ramping up to 6GW by 2030.

When Siemens Gamesa was awarded the turbine supply contract for Dam Nai in April, the manufacturer stated that it expects "significant growth" in Vietnam in the coming years as the company "begins to utilise some of the best wind resources in south-east Asia".
